“it’s everybody’s duty to give the world a reason to dance.”
“Our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law—for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country. Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm.”
— President Obama
back in november i wrote about how important equality is to me and because of that, among other reasons, my vote securely belonged to President Obama. i believed in his commitment to the issue then and i feel reassured and confident after today’s Inauguration speech. how blessed we all are to have such a courageous and clear-intentioned leader.
congratulations and welcome back, Mr. President!

refinedhype.com: MaG's break down of "freedom."
It’s been almost three years since the last full project from MaG. In internet terms that’s a lifetime, but for an artist who’s concerned with truly making an album he can be proud of, not just increase his “buzz”, that’s just how long it takes to make something like “freedom”.
say word, Nathan.
click the link above for the full post on refinedhype.com. MaG was gracious enough to give us some insight into his inspiration and process while making “freedom.”, with special attention to “black roses” and “paper airplanes”.
and yes, i did create a dance to “paper airplanes”. it is cute. but it’s far more complicated than MaG explained.

happy 84th birthday, MLK Jr., and happy freedom. day, everyone!!!
for the following post, J will be exclusively referred to as MaG. so there’s no confusion. (oh, hiphop double life!) freedom. is a project two years in the making and i couldn’t be more excited that it’s finally here! before you think my gushing is bias, if you ask J, i mean MaG, he’ll tell you i’m an objective listen and i’m always honest. and in my most objective and honest opinion, this is an excellent piece of music. beginning to end, a straight thru listen. no bullshit, no fillers, just honest stories over perfectly picked beats by a gifted writer divinely chosen to be a hip hop voice. he’s the blessed one, we’re all just lucky.
originally, i planned to breakdown each song. but it got crazy long and the last thing i want you doing is reading this instead of listening to freedom. so, instead, i’ll save that for another post. for now, plug in your headphones or pull out the big speakers and take a listen. stream or download, whatever your steez. leave comments on rcrdlbl.com. let me know what you think here. share the album with friends. hit up MaG himself on twitter or facebook. it’s freedom., y’all. you can do whatever you want!

one more thing. i can’t express how fortunate i feel to, without any real musical prowess of my own to speak of, have the luxury of having so many memories documented thru music. these are MaG’s words and experiences, of course, but i was lucky enough to be apart of so many of these stories, studio sessions, and growing pains. i’m honored to have had a teeny, tiny creative part in this. and i’m so proud of MaG. enjoy the listen, folks.
favorite dress of the night:
Kate Hudson, wearing Alexander McQueen. according to past years, i fully expected her to be a favorite. stunning perfection, per ushe.
second favorite dress:
Rosario Dawson, wearing Antonio Berardi. the structure, the color, i love every stitch.
favorite hair:
hands down, Glenn Close’s cute curly bob and Kerry Washington’s bone straight goodness. also, as someone who usually wears more makeup than her flawless face calls for, i found Kerry’s nearly nude makeup refreshing.
other honorable mentions:
Naomi Watts in Zac Posen and Megan Fox wearing Dolce & Gabbana.
aside from every second that Tina and Amy were on screen (which wasn’t nearly enough, in my humble opinion), this was my absolute favorite moment from last night’s Golden Globes. Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig to host in 2015! (i want another year of the Fey/Poehler ticket, with much more airtime, of course.)
for my play by play of the entire show, check last night’s twitter feed. i even remembered to almost always mention who won what. for a really good list of all the other hilarious clips, check Huffington Post’s perfect list of the top 10.
in the event of an earthquake…
specifically, my LA friends:
if/when an earthquake hits, call 911 and have them meet you at my apartment. i will most likely be in the hall closet with the door closed, look there first. inform EMS that aside from the pill, i’m on no other medication. i will be unable to speak. please look away while i clean myself up and change my pants. keep all suitcases and travel websites away from me for at least 72 hours, as i will attempt to get on the first thing smokin’ outta here. make sure i have some essentials like eggs, green tea and netflix. i will not leave home for quite some time.
also, if you could please stay in constant contact with my mother, that’d be great. she can sense the crazy in my voice so i should not be allowed to speak to her until my nerves have calmed. thanks, guys.

past due homework: 2013 resolutions.
okay molls, showed us hers and asked we show her ours. here are mine:
- start telling people i’m the secret lovechild of Oprah Winfrey and Judd Apatow and see where that gets me.
- write a self-help book entitled: “Eat, Pray, Instagram” and watch my bank account BLOW UP!
- steal all of my upstairs neighbors shoes and replace them with feather socks.
- create and market feather socks.
- legally change my name to Julia Sugarbaker. then go around doing this.
- find a small, dark basement to host my Argo-themed birthday party.
- bring back the following words/phrases: ”steez”, “o.p.p.”, “hella”, “rollin’ wit the homies”, “oh snap!”
- continue writing open letters to President Obama offering to barter various styling/blogging services in exchange for student loan forgiveness.
- carry and give birth to Brad & Angelina’s 7th baby, solidifying my position as the greatest of the celebrity deities.
- honor my 2013 horoscope’s prediction of favorable “mystique” by keeping my real “resolutions” and “continuations” to myself.
