happy birthday, Miriam Makeba!
i remember watching you on The Cosby Show many (many) years ago and thinking you were magic. some time after that i learned more about who you were and your significant contribution to music and civil rights. thank you for your service, your voice, and your light.
big shouts to Google for honoring “Mama Africa” on the homepage!
happy birthday, mj.
still rockin’ to you. still thinking of you. still missing you.
today is my brother’s birthday. a pretty exciting one for him since he can now rent a car without an underage fee. people all over the world should celebrate. have some champagne with dinner, sing happy birthday aloud in the street or eat a double chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream and chocolate sprinkles to celebrate another year of his life.
he was my favorite person back then:

(how could he not be? look at that face. seriously.)
and he’s still my favorite person today:

(yes, that’s us doing a dance number. don’t hate.)
he’s who i’m most grateful for and my only favorite brother ever.
i love you, Jarek. hope you’re having an amazing day!
happy birthday, Prince!
i love you. and, thank you from the bottom of my musical and sexual soul. because of you and your early inspiration, each has developed quite nicely.
happy birthday, Barbra Streisand!!
happy birthday, Diana Ross!
you so pretty.
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
—Nelson Mandela
it’s kinda interesting. i (shamefully) forgot his birthday yesterday…but i think subconsciously i was very Mandela-aware. i am reading “Mandela’s Way: 15 Lessons on Life, Love and Courage” but aside from that, yesterday was a very free-feeling day for me. one of those types of days i cherish. i had great conversations with wonderful friends and family, creative ideas were flowing in the work i got done and i felt really great standing where i was standing. not grappled by the “how”, the “when” or the fear. i think Mandela was in the air…and i was celebrating a bit. (of course, i’m sure he would’ve been more pleased if there was some service to my community mixed in there…but trust, Mr. Mandela…i was working on it…)
happy belated birthday to an amazing man who i admire a great, great deal. imini emandi kuwe, Madiba!
“Wow! 40 years that include being high yella in chocolate city, scoring the 3-point conversion pass on my high school tackle football team, gum-smacking-Public Enemy-quoting-black-militant at U of M, surviving depression during 2 years in a small town in West Africa, almost getting shot in my classroom in the South Bronx…celebrity dogwalking in the 90210,starting a Film/TV acting career once already ‘over the hill’, getting fat with my family in Sicily on holidays, making Mixed Roots a reality with my Mixed BFF, and being supported by my lovely friends and family to keep going, keep dreaming, keep doing. Thank you SO much for my b-day wishes. Many more adventures to come!”
—Fanshen Cox, via her facebook birthday status. reading this made me smile. i aspire to be this accomplished and celebratory in my 40th year. happy bday & cheers to you, fanshen!
